Silicone vs. Saline Implants Houston

What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of silicone and saline implants?

Silicone:

Advantages

  • More natural look and feel
  • Feels softer
  • Low risk of rippling

Disadvantages

  • The larger the implant, the larger the incision needed
  • Only select sizes available
  • If implant ruptures then silicone can leak out of the implant
  • Imaging (MRI) is recommended to assess integrity of implant

Saline:

Advantages

  • Small incision can be used for any size implant
  • Volume of the implants are completely adjustable
  • If implant ruptures, then only saline (salt water) leaks out which is absorbed by the body

Disadvantages

  • Higher risk of rippling
  • If implant ruptures, breast volume will decrease significantly and size differences between breasts will likely be obvious
  • Can feel harder and less natural
  • May not look as natural
